In the second section of the nave from the east there is a painting of the Fall of Man. It shows Adam and Eve, the tree of knowledge and the serpent wearing a woman's headscarf. Why is the snake in Paradise often shown as a female? An Arabic legend has the answer. It explains that the snake was originally the queen of all animals. It was created thousands of years before man and was raised as Eve's playmate. It had a head like a ruby and emerald eyes. Its silhouette resembled that of a camel and the most beautiful colours played on its skin. Its hair was as soft as a noble maiden's, its nourishment was saffron and it sang the song of love. It lived by the banks of the River Al-Kauthar in Paradise, which smelled of musk and southernwood.
