Millennium-old ford

At the Kjærgårdsmølle watermill near Struer, the ford that crosses Bredkær Stream was an important north to south, east to west crossroads. Prehistoric sunken roads are found in the steep slopes down to the ford. Bronze Age burial mounds speckle the landscape as soon as you reach higher ground above Bredkær Stream. The burial mounds follow the old roads. North of Kjærgårdsmølle, Mølbjerg Field and Klosterhede Plantation still house large burial mounds. And to the south, a chain of mounds stretches into the distance.

The ford was especially dangerous. Legend has it that dark creatures waited here to prevent travellers from crossing. The Devil himself is said to have appeared at the mill. In the old days there was a small inn at the mill, where the locals often enjoyed a good game of cards. One night a stranger joined the game. He dropped the cards. Another player was picking them up when he saw the stranger had paws complete with claws. What the Devil? A girl ran to fetch the priest. He exorcised the Devil out through a window. But first, the Devil demanded a soul for his trouble. Take the watchdog," said the priest. And the dog was heard to howl when the Devil seized its soul, or so the story goes. "
