The ford was especially dangerous. Legend has it that dark creatures waited here to prevent travellers from crossing. The Devil himself is said to have appeared at the mill. In the old days there was a small inn at the mill, where the locals often enjoyed a good game of cards. One night a stranger joined the game. He dropped the cards. Another player was picking them up when he saw the stranger had paws complete with claws. What the Devil? A girl ran to fetch the priest. He exorcised the Devil out through a window. But first, the Devil demanded a soul for his trouble. Take the watchdog," said the priest. And the dog was heard to howl when the Devil seized its soul, or so the story goes. "
