Rolling out the first barrel
One of the largest breweries in the world began on Brolæggerstræde 5. The founder of the brewery J. C. Jacobsen grew up in the front house. But he spent a lot of time down in the basement, experimenting with a novelty, lager beer, before establishing his own brewery outside the city. This brewery was destined to become the Carlsberg we know today. The industrial revolution began in Britain and the British breweries were ahead in a technical sense. Yet J. C. Jacobsen travelled to South Germany to see how they brewed lager beer. Brewer Sedlmayr in Munich had special importance. In 1846, brewer Jacobsen took a packet of pure yeast home with him from Sedlmayr. This was the yeast from which his future production would grow.
