Resistance fighting at the inn

Hvidsten Inn, between Randers and Mariager, has stood on this spot for more than 200 years. The listed inn is owned by the fifth generation of the Fiil family. But Hvidsten Inn is probably best known as the stamping ground for the Hvidsten Group, which in 1943 and 1944 – during the German occupation – collected large amounts of weapons and ammunition dropped by plane for distribution in the resistance movement in Jutland. Sadly, the brave Hvidsten Group was arrested by the Gestapo, the secret German police, on the morning of 11 March 1944. Eight members of the group – including innkeeper Marius Fiil, his son and his son-in-law – were sentenced to death and executed on 29 June 1944.

Marius Fiil is most famous for his exploits as a resistance fighter. But most of his time was spent on innkeeping at Hvidsten Inn. Marius took over the inn with his wife, Gudrun, in 1925. He was good at talking to people and Gudrun was a talented cook, so the inn flourished – that meant extensions were needed. Marius built them himself. Some of the unusual buildings that comprise Hvidsten Inn today were built by Marius Fiil with his own hands. Often he used recycled materials that he obtained by bartering with locals. Some of the panels and doors in the inn are from a bank in Randers, and some of the benches come from the Jewish synagogue in Randers.
