Kronborg shot to stardom when Shakespeare set his play Hamlet" at the castle. Kronborg was also known for having the largest ballroom in Northern Europe. From the 15th to the 19th century, the castle played a central role in collecting taxes from all ships sailing through the Sound. When sailing southwards with the castle to starboard, you appreciate its importance as the fort that ruled the Sound. The sound tax also made Elsinore into the country's most cosmopolitan city, known worldwide. Deep in the castle cellars, you'll find a statue of the sleeping giant Holger Danske, waiting to defend Denmark in times of war. Kronborg is featured on UNESCO's World Heritage List. "
