HENRY HEERUP’S CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AT SKALLEBØLLE SKOLE

On display in the small school library of Skallebølle Skole, Henry Heerup's (1907-93) work "Legedage" ('Playdays') from 1969 consists of 8 lithographs and an accompanying foreword. "Legedage" was donated to the school as part of a major political programme to bring art out to the whole of Denmark, not least to outlying districts, far from the national galleries and museums. A cultural policy report in 1969 declared the mission: the State was to use art as an instrument for boosting the nation's cultural appreciation. The Danish Arts Foundation supported the visions by placing large numbers of graphic artworks with schools and other public institutions throughout Denmark.
