THE WHITE MEN AT SÆDDING STRAND

Svend Wiig Hansen's work "Mennesket ved havet" ("Man by the sea") is located at the Sædding Strand seafront on the outskirts of Esbjerg. Seated on an embankment separating the road from the beach are the four monumental human figures. As early as in 1954, Wiig Hansen (1922-97) had made a model for a similar group of sculptures, which he envisaged installed at Skagens Gren, the northernmost tip of Jutland. Four decades later, to mark Esbjerg's centenary as a market town, the artist's early prototype was converted into the work that now stands as the town's landmark.
