For more than 200 years, the exact location of Ole Rømer's Observatorium Tusculanum remained a mystery. It was located near the Pilenborg estate, which was also known as Tusculum after Roman statesman Cicero's country estate outside Rome. But the exact location of the observatory was lost after Rømer's death. In the 1800s, a burial mound, which still bears the name Ole Rømer's Barrow" was identified as a possible location. But no observatory was found. In the 1900s there were several unsuccessful attempts to trace it. Not until 1978,could excavations be made at the exact location, when Claus Thykier of the National Museum of Denmark, who also undertook several fruitless digs, used the lines of sight recorded in an anonymous account from 1765 to pinpoint the Observatory.
