Denmark is often said to lack raw materials. But take that with a pinch of salt because the cement industry has been quarrying chalk at the North Jutland fiords for years. And Scandinavia's only salt factory has been based at Assens in North Jutland between Mariager and Hadsund since 1963. The factory collects its raw materials west of Hobro from an underground salt dome 14 cubic kilometres in size. This is a kind of salt mountain formed 220-260 million years ago. The salt is washed up in brine about 900-1,500 metres deep and is pumped 26 kilometres to a factory where the brine is evaporated. Altogether, 600,000 tons of salt was produced in 2009 and sold in supermarkets, used by industry or spread on roads in winter.
