Mission against prostitution

In 1877, the Church Association for the Inner Mission in Denmark, the evangelical wing of the Church of Denmark, opened Magdalenehjemmet on Jagtvej in Copenhagen. A decade earlier, the Inner Mission had taken the first initiatives to help so-called fallen women" out of prostitution. Through the "Society for the Salvation of Unfortunate Girls", the Inner Mission attempted to reeducate the women through practical work and care of the family. The project failed. But a new, young principal called Thora Esche turned the initiative into a success. She stressed the importance of offering the women a safe haven and sense of community with each other – a home. Over the years, larger and better facilities were required and in 1896, the Skovtofte centre opened in Lyngby. Skovtofte today is a training college for special needs educators. "
