Country house with poetic guests

Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen, is the location of Sølyst Mansion, where The Royal Copenhagen Shooting Club has met since 1949. Its heyday began in 1776, when Ernst Schimmelmann bought it as his summer residence. Schimmelmann's wealthy father, Heinrich, was the source of both his money and important positions in the world of finance. Personally, he was not such an astute businessman and had the unthankful task of being Minister of Finance during the national bankruptcy in 1813. Schimmelmann's real passion was culture of a romantic and witty nature. He therefore collected the political and artistic elite of the time at his country house, including the famous poet Adam Oehlenschläger.

Adam Oehlenschläger wrote a tribute to Ernst Schimmelmann to commemorate his death in 1831. The poem refers to a deserted seat in a wood, which is Schimmelmann's monument to his first wife, Emilie.
