Royal Copenhagen's VIP property

The home of the managing director of Royal Copenhagen was built in 1906. During the latter half of the 20th century, Frederiksberg developed from a village into a large metropolitan town. First large houses, then blocks of flats, but also large industrial buildings followed. One was Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik (also called Royal Copenhagen), which moved to Frederiksberg in 1882. In 1885, architect and porcelain artist Arnold Krog became the factory's creative director. He was promoted to managing director in 1891. Krog moved into the property with his wife, daughter and two maids. There was plenty of room. Eight rooms covering 400 square metres and a garden like a park.

As industrialisation gathered speed in the latter half of the 19th century, Danish society radically changed. New towns shot up and the two old towns that made up the capital, Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, grew explosively. New classes moved in. The cream of the new middle classes comprised manufacturers, wholesalers and managing directors. Workers and low-level clerks were at the bottom of the ladder. Housing clearly defined class differences. As on Steen Blichers Vej, managing directors' residences often adjoined factory compounds. Otherwise, members of the middle class built their own large houses in the areas that developed in Østerbro, in parts of Frederiksberg and in the larger provincial towns. The dregs of society were banished to bedsits or one-bedroom flats in tenement houses with outdoor conveniences.
