Illegal houses still standing proud
The loghouse technique was introduced sometime during the Viking era or Middle Ages. Loghouses require a lot of timber. For that reason, the technique has been banned several times in Denmark. In the densely forested area between Kolding and Aabenraa, the illegal loghouses continued to be built until the early 1800s. Their ingenious prefab construction could easily be dismantled and rebuilt. The houses were therefore considered personal property – furniture and not real estate. Some of those that remain standing have been moved several times since they were built. South Jutland has about ten remaining loghouses. Loghouses can also be seen at the Open Air Museum in Lyngby near Copenhagen, at the museum in Haderslev and on Hjerl Heath.
