At Vasagård on the island of Bornholm is an unusual long barrow containing both a dolmen chamber and a passage grave. The dolmen chamber, around 5,600-5,500 years old, is the oldest. The passage grave is somewhat later, around 5,200 years old. The long barrow is right beside a large cult centre covering many hectares. The cult centre was like an open-air shrine where religious rites were performed. In the Stone Age, it was surrounded by rows of palisades. The cult centre and dolmen are contemporaneous, and were in use for several centuries after the passage grave was constructed. This means that the site was used for religious rituals for more than 500 years.
