Facts about CARARE

CARARE is a three-year EU-financed project, which started on 1 February 2010. 28 partners from 19 countries spread evenly across Europe participate in the project. These include Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. The project has an overall budget of almost €5.4M, of which the EU is financing 80 %, or about €4.3M.

The first CARARE data are expected to be available at Europeana in the course of the first half of 2011.

Project objective

The objective of the project is:

  • To increase the quantity and quality of digitalised information on archaeology and architecture in Europeana by supplying 2 million geographically localised objects, and to include 3D and Virtual Reality.
  • To establish a place from which archaeological and architectural data can be gathered and supplied to Europeana.
  • To help cultural heritage institutions supply their information about cultural heritage to Europeana by developing user-friendly tools and services.
  • To ensure future updating of cultural heritage data in Europeana.

CARARE and the national digitalisation strategy

CARARE contributes to the realisation of the Danish national digitalisation strategy, which recommends that cultural heritage be digitalised, that metadata be standardised in accordance with international standards, and that data be made available to Europeana. Thus, the project is in line with existing collaboration between archives, libraries and museums as well as the national effort to make cultural heritage accessible internationally. In Denmark, active participants have so far included The Royal Library, Roskilde Library and the Danish Agency for Libraries and Media. This is due to the fact that information from the library world has been a specific focus for Europeana. This is about to change.
