Mapping the Heritage

A cultural heritage atlas is a tool that the local authority's employees and politicians can use to secure the local cultural heritage, but also a popular work of reference for anyone interested in local history.

The Heritage Agency primarily supports local conservation work by preparing atlases of cultural heritage in selected local authority areas. The first atlas was published in 1990, and the series now numbers more than 70 titles.

Most of the atlases cover one local authority area, but a few cover several. A separate atlas has been published for each part of Copenhagen.

The cultural heritage atlases are a collaboration between local authorities, museums and the Heritage Agency, assisted by groups of interested citizens, conservation associations and other local people.

The atlases comprise descriptions of cultural environments, as well as the registration of all local buildings constructed before 1940.

Atlases published later than the year 2000 are available in both printed and online versions.
